Why Is My Washer Not Spinning? 7 Common Causes

A washer that won't spin is usually caused by one of seven things: an unbalanced load, a worn drive belt, a failing motor coupling, a broken lid or door switch, a clogged drain preventing spin, worn suspension components, or a faulty control board. Most are inexpensive, quick repairs once identified.
1. An unbalanced load (check this first)
Before assuming anything is broken, redistribute the load and run the cycle again. Modern washers deliberately refuse to spin at full speed if they detect an uneven weight distribution — it's a safety feature, not a malfunction. A single heavy item like a comforter is a common culprit.
2. A worn or broken drive belt (top-load washers)
On belt-driven top-load washers, the belt connects the motor to the transmission and drum. A worn, cracked, or snapped belt means the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn. This usually comes with a burning-rubber smell and is a straightforward, affordable repair.
3. A failing motor coupling (top-load washers)
Many top-load washers use a small plastic coupling between the motor and transmission that's designed to be a "sacrificial" part — it fails before the more expensive transmission does. If your washer agitates but won't spin, or makes a grinding noise, this inexpensive part is a common cause.
4. A door or lid switch that isn't engaging
Front-load washers won't spin (for safety) unless the door lock switch confirms the door is fully closed and locked. Top-load washers have a similar lid switch. A switch that's worn, misaligned, or has a broken sensing tab can make the machine think the door is open even when it's closed.
5. A clogged drain preventing the spin cycle from starting
Most washers won't attempt a full spin cycle with standing water still in the tub — it's a safety and mechanical protection feature. If your washer isn't draining (see our separate note on drain pumps), it may look like a "won't spin" problem when the real issue is upstream.
6. Worn suspension components
Springs, shocks, or suspension rods stabilize the drum during spin. When these wear out, some washers will refuse to enter a full spin cycle (to prevent damage or a runaway vibration) rather than spin dangerously off-balance. This often comes with loud banging during the wash portion of the cycle even before the spin issue shows up.
7. A faulty control board or motor control unit
Less common, but it happens: the electronic control that tells the motor to enter spin mode fails or loses communication with the motor. This is usually accompanied by an error code on newer machines, which actually makes it easier — not harder — to diagnose, since the code points directly at the failed system.
How to narrow it down before calling
A few quick checks: does the washer agitate normally but just not spin (points to belt/coupling/suspension)? Does it hum but not move at all (motor or control board)? Is there standing water at the end (drain issue)? Is there an error code on the display (check your manual for what it maps to, or just tell us the code — we can often narrow it down before we arrive)?

Is a washer not spinning always a big repair?
No — many of the causes above (belt, coupling, lid switch) are relatively inexpensive, quick repairs. The banging/suspension and control board cases tend to run higher, but a diagnostic tells you exactly which one you're dealing with before you commit to anything.
Can I fix a washer motor coupling myself?
On some top-load models it's accessible, but it usually requires removing the agitator and sometimes tipping the machine — not something we'd recommend without experience, since a mistake can turn a small repair into a bigger one.
Why does my washer make a loud noise right before it stops spinning?
That pattern often points to a worn belt slipping or a bearing/suspension issue reacting to the spin speed — both worth having looked at before they cause secondary damage.
